NewsLetter from SYSNET ASSOCIATES (INDIA) PRIVATE LIMITED. Issue No: 002 Dated 1st August 2007
Thanks for your huge response to our Inaugural newsletter issue last month.
Its simply overwhelming. EMails are flying thick and fast. There have been plenty of accolades and a few brickbats too. It does seem clear that SpApp has made a stride or two, in establishing itself as an AppMaker.
Let us continue our Kwikshot efforts on SpApp. Apart from answering your queries on email, we shall put them up here. Hence, we are beginning a Q&A session, from this issue. All these questions and more have been individually replied to, already.

SpApp-An Enterprise AppMaker:

Above screen-shot on SpApp shows how to login. SpApp supports many applications in Enterprise series. Select an Application, enter the User Name and Password to login.
Specify (Your) Application is SpApp (es-p-app).

SpApp is an Enterprise AppMaker. In last issue, we highlighted what it can do for you. Let us see what it cannot do for you. SpApp is an Information System Maker. It is not a graphical or a CAD tool. It is an Intranet tool, to handle your information needs. It is not web-enabled (as-of-now). Do not expect it to be a Statistical analyzer, DSS tool or a movie player. SpApp does a lot of things in Information Management in any domain and expectedly, does not do much in other areas.

Key Features
  • SpApp needs you to specify the application logic.
  • Use SpecGuide in simple business English.
  • No coding, compilation or technical documentation as in traditional systems.
  • Don't recruit IT Developers and Administrators.
  • SpApp uses a built-in Data store. So, don't buy a separate database licence.
  • It can take in data from other systems thru' text/CSV files & reciprocate.
  • Use simple Admin steps to backup App, etc.
  • Have as many users for your App as you want, even in Professional edition.
  • SpApp's GUI is very friendly and needs least training ever.
  • Sysnet-supplied Apps come with proper Demo and Tutorials.
SpApp is very rich in features, facilities and provide genuine value for money. Savings in IT Project times and costs truly justify taking SpApp route for Business Apps.

Q&A: Your Questions are answered by SpApp Experts, below.
Question 1: I want to develop a billing app. How to do it with SpApp?
Answer: As a first step, plan your App logic, in terms of profiles, elements and the relationships. Then, go to SpApp's SpecGuide and specify the logic. Then, check on Data Management by adding up some data. Test/Check properly. If you see errors, go back to SpecGuide and alter the logic properly and check again. Once you're satisfied, go to Admin menu and Go Live. That's all to it. Of course, your Business Logic is not validated by SpApp. For example, you may specify a Discount element value to be added up to Bill Value by mistake instead of subtraction. SpApp goes ahead 'as is' and adds up. The Business Logic, as always, is in your hands.
Question 2: Managed to create an App to deal with Stores and Inventory. We do not want certain Stores Staff to see price and value data. What do we do?
Answer: Its easy. For certain users to see less elements than others, open Admin/Users Screen, as App Administrator. Select the User concerned. Select the concerned profile(s) and assign partial Access. Check Elements for View or Update. In this case, Pricing and Value elements can be left without selection. Save and exit. These elements are not shown for that user. More options such as One-Can-See-Can't-Alter also exist.
Question 3: There are frequent references to someone named Administrator in Help documentation. Who is he?
Answer: In SpApp, an Administrator is the person in charge of the Application. His/Her User Name is fixed as the App Name. The password can be changed by him/her periodically. The Administrator is totally responsible for the maintenance and administrative activities of the App and the users. He/She defines the users and their permissions, takes periodic backups, maintains the App, alters the App for any specific logic changes and so on. He/She acts as the Eye of the Application. SpApp provides completely menu-driven suite of options to enable the Administrator to maintain the App without IT staff support.
Question 4: I installed SpApp first and created a sample app. Then I reinstalled SpApp. The App remains. Why?
Answer: SpApp is a formal working environment for Business Applications. Software Reinstalls only copies software files and ensures that your Apps and data intact. This is to prevent reinstall accidents.
To remove a specific App, try Delete App option in Administration. If you really want a clean slate, delete SpApp folder after UnInstall.

Question 5: Thanks for giving us a wonderful tool to play with. We created a few Apps and also put in data. Now, we want to take these to MS-SQL. Any tips?
Answer: Thank you for your kind words. If you wish to take the whole App to say MS-SQL Server, go to Spec Guide, login and choose SQL option. You can prepare a file of SQL definitions (Tables/Fields/etc) or Data Insert statements or both, into a Text File. Even large amounts of data get prepared as SQL statements in seconds. This file can be used suitably.
Please note RDBMS technology holds only data and complex matters like Triggers and Procedures. SpApp holds the Business Logic as an intrinsic part of an App and not provided out. Typically, you may need to write/design forms, programs and triggers in SQL/VB or C++, to match the results produced by SpApp.

Lets wind up now. Please do write to us at info@SysnetIndia.com, at any time with your queries. See you soon, in the next NewsLetter. Cheers!
